Male’ Maldives, Monday, April 16, 2007: Youth in the Maldives is a potent force and understandably given their sizeable population and influence, they are a target of many political parties. To achieve their own ends, political parties could misuse youth or even use them as the trump card. In recent months Maldivian youth have been at the centre stage of local politics.

Yes, the much hailed talks between the DRP and MDP, at the invitation of the Leader of DRP, has come to its inevitable conclusion; the talks being called off. The adjective ‘inevitable’ being used here, is perhaps the saddest aspect of the whole sorry situation.
But, it was apparent and evident, from day one that the talks would collapse. There was no second conclusion to particular discussion that took place between the two parties. That particular communication would fail.
There they were. Biggies from the government circle. Ministers Hassan Saeed, Ilyas, Gasim, Dr. Shaheed, Thasneem all being led by Aneesa. All Ministers in the Cabinet and polished politicians. There they sat, formal and polite. Starting off a process, even they, even then, would have known, would really have the one ending.
And there they were. MDP Chairperson Nasheed, Vice President Zaki, Afeef, Moosa, Mariya, Aslam and Aslam all of whom were using the opportunity and the forum to heap abuse and invective rhetoric against the government and especially against President Maumoon.
What Maumoon had done, and how he had done what he had done. And what he was supposed to do now. Yes, that was all the MDP talked about. Maumoon, Maumoon. That was all they could talk about.
It took special skill, calm and patience for the DRP team just to stay on. Perhaps, it was the high value of what they were pursuing, the unique reward of a fast tracked Reform Constitution, that kept the DRP team in place. That and the patience and discipline of DRP Leader Gayoom, who had personally sent them.
