NEWS ANALYSIS/ Election of the Speaker: Govt and Opposition in a show of strength tomorrow amidst greater cost to reforms |
Male’ Maldives, Tuesday, May 01, 2007: The Government and the Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are ready for another test of strength tomorrow with the election of a new Speaker in the Special Majlis.
Many names of possible candidates from both parties are being speculated and the two parties will decide their candidates today following respective Parliamentary Group meetings.
Among those speculated are Deputy Speaker of the Special Majlis Shaheen Hameed, People’s Majlis Speaker Ahmed Zahir, Information Minister Mohamed Nasheed and MDP Shadow Cabinet Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi.
The election for a new Speaker follows the Speaker’s resignation from the post on Sunday after he had a narrow shave at Thursday’s no confidence motion against him.
Questions arise as to what will be in store in the aftermath of electing a new Speaker. Will it end up in a Constitutional crisis or will it lead to a no-win situation for both parties where the real casualty will be the country’s political reform process which continues to remain in the backburner?
